I learned from our rep yesterday that Wellshire Farms has been bought up by Whole Foods. As part of their corporate restructuring, the Wellshire Farms line will now be sold exclusively through Whole Foods stores. This means that some of the items we previously were able to order, are no longer available. This includes the maple turkey breakfast sausage and beef bacon.
This is something that is quite problematic for those of us who have to eat GLUTEN-FREE, allergen-free, nitrate-free, chemical-free meats. Whole Foods has apparently been restructuring its corporation to act more like Walmart. It has even gathered together an exclusive buyers' club that eliminates the smaller dealers. By doing this, they are focusing purely on profit margins, and using the business guru principles of "abandonment" of less profitable avenues of selling, which means they are abandoning their niche markets.
As you can see from the 2nd article, a little over a year ago Wellshire was dedicated to broadening the niche market that would include people like us who have to be on special diets. This focus is apparently changing now that Whole Foods has taken over.
Our rep is putting out a petition and writing a letter to the company, as are other sales reps around the country, urging Whole Foods to reconsider this disappointing corporate decision. Some of you may wish to write a letter encouraging Whole Foods to recover the original vision of Wellshire Farms, which was to provide meat to people like us who must eat gluten-free and who live in isolated rural areas.
